Title:  Stitcher/Garment Manufacturer - Colonial Williamsburg Retail

Job Description

We are seeking individuals who are confident and competent in sewing for a garment manufacturer position in the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg. This position requires attention to detail, knowledge of garment construction, and the ability to operate sewing machines.  A Stitcher is responsible for the construction and finishing of various 18th century costumes and accessories.  This is a non-guest facing role. A Skills Demonstration will be administered during the time of interview.

Job Responsibilities

• Garment Construction: Ability to complete a variety of period garments including but not limited to accessories, outerwear, menswear, ladies clothing, and children’s clothing.
• Machine Usage: Ability to operate industrial sewing machines, a serger overlock machine, and a gravity iron, in addition to hand sewing in a neat manner.
• Quality Control: Check completed garments for flaws and fix when necessary.  Able to self-check and critique work.
• Safety: Maintain a clean and safe working environment by following safety procedures when operating machines and other tools.
• Communication: Collaborate with sewing room staff and other departments to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner.

Qualifications

• Ability to operate industrial sewing machines, a serger overlock machine, and a gravity iron, in addition to hand sewing in a neat manner.

• General sewing knowledge: both on a machine and in handwork i.e. machine functions, universal seam allowances, finishing stitches, basic garment construction.

• Ability to complete a variety of period garments including but not limited to accessories, outerwear, menswear, ladies clothing, and childrens clothing.
• Time management skills - this is a garment manufacturer supplying a brick-and-mortar store front.
• Ability to follow written, verbal, and pictorial instructions
• Take constructive criticism and grow from it. Ability to ask questions, be curious, and ready to learn.
• Ability to do repetitive tasks
• Basic math in conjunction with measuring fabric and cutting it correctly and adjusting yardage in inventory sheets
• Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, and in a team.
• Fabric identification like cottons, linens, voile, silk, etc.
• 18th Century costume knowledge, focusing on 1760s-1790s or ability to research and replicate historic silhouettes
• Previous experience in a costume shop or similar garment construction shop
• Pattern-making or drafting, draping, or general crafting skills

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
