Job Description

The Fabric Cutter is responsible for preparing fabric for production by accurately cutting materials according to specified patterns and measurements. This position requires attention to detail, an understanding of fabric types and their properties, and the ability to work efficiently with various cutting tools and machines. The Fabric Cutter ensures that each fabric piece is prepared correctly, contributing to the overall quality and efficiency of the production process.

Job Responsibilities

• Fabric Preparation: Review and understand production orders to determine fabric requirements, including types, quantities, and sizes.
• Cutting: Use manual or automated cutting tools (scissors, rotary cutters, fabric cutting machines) to cut fabrics into specified shapes and sizes.
• Pattern Layout: Lay out patterns on fabric to minimize waste and maximize the use of materials, ensuring proper grain alignment and pattern matching.
• Quality Control: Inspect fabric for defects, stains, or imperfections before cutting. Ensure cuts are clean and precise to avoid rework.
• Organization: Organize and label cut fabric pieces according to production batches, ensuring that each piece is ready for the next stage of production.
• Safety: Maintain a clean and safe working environment by following safety procedures when operating cutting tools and machinery.
• Communication: Collaborate with sewing room staff and other departments to ensure that cutting requirements are met in a timely and accurate manner.
• Inventory Management: Track fabric usage and report any discrepancies or fabric shortages to management.

Qualifications

Attention to Detail: 

• Ability to cut fabric accurately according to measurements and patterns.
• Fabric Knowledge: Familiarity with various fabric types, textures, and properties, as well as how they behave during cutting and sewing.
• Manual Dexterity: Proficient in using cutting tools such as scissors, rotary cutters, and cutting machines.
• Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently to meet deadlines.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and handle fabrics of varying weights and sizes.
• Teamwork: Willingness to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot cutting issues or fabric defects and find solutions.

Preferred Experience:

• Previous experience in a fabric cutting role or within a sewing or textile production environment.
• Experience with industrial cutting machines and pattern-making software.
• Knowledge of garment manufacturing processes.
• General sewing knowledge – both hand and machine.
• Pattern making/drafting knowledge a plus.
• Interest or knowledge of historical clothing, specifically 18th century garments and accessories.

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
