Job Description

The General Manager, Facilities Management is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of facilities services across a higher education campus. This role ensures the delivery of safe, reliable, and cost-effective facility operations while maintaining exceptional client satisfaction and supporting the institution's mission, student experience, and campus community.

 

The General Manager leads a diverse team responsible for building maintenance, custodial services, grounds management, utilities coordination, sustainability initiatives, vendor management, and capital project support. Success in this role requires strong leadership, financial acumen, customer relationship management, and a commitment to operational excellence.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operations Leadership

    • Direct all day-to-day facilities operations across assigned campus buildings and properties.
    • Ensure facilities services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contractual commitments and organizational standards.
    • Develop and implement operational plans that support campus priorities and long-term facility objectives.
    • Monitor performance metrics, service levels, and productivity to drive continuous improvement.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental policies.

    Client & Campus Relationships

    • Serve as the primary liaison with university administration and key campus stakeholders.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with academic departments, student affairs, housing, athletics, and other campus partners.
    • Address client concerns proactively and develop solutions that enhance service delivery.
    • Participate in campus committees, planning meetings, and strategic initiatives as appropriate.

    Financial Management

    • Manage annual operating budgets and financial performance for the account.
    • Analyze labor, materials, and operational expenses to ensure budget compliance.
    • Identify opportunities for cost savings, operational efficiencies, and process improvements.
    • Support forecasting, capital planning, and budget development activities.
    • Ensure accurate reporting of financial and operational performance metrics.

    Team Leadership

    • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing facilities management team.
    • Provide coaching, performance management, and professional development opportunities.
    • Foster a culture of engagement, accountability, safety, and inclusion.
    • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and workforce planning to support operational needs.
    • Lead managers, supervisors, skilled trades personnel, custodial teams, and support staff.

    Safety & Compliance

    • Champion a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to OSHA, local, state, and institutional requirements.
    • Conduct routine audits and inspections to maintain compliance and mitigate risk.
    • Oversee emergency preparedness and response planning.
    • Maintain documentation, certifications, and training records as required.

    Facilities & Asset Management

    • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
    • Support capital improvement projects, renovations, and infrastructure upgrades.
    • Manage vendor relationships and service agreements.
    • Collaborate with campus partners on sustainability and energy management initiatives.
    • Utilize CMMS and other technology platforms to monitor performance and asset health.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Business Administration, Construction Management, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of progressive facilities management experience.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing large teams and complex operations.
  • Experience managing budgets, financial reporting, and operational performance.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance, custodial, grounds, and building systems operations.
  • Excellent communication, client relationship, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and facility management software systems.
