Job Description

This internship offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in sustainability practices within campus dining services at Loyola Marymount University. In collaboration with LMU Dining and Aramark, the intern will support initiatives that promote environmental responsibility, data-driven decision-making, and student engagement. The role blends sustainability marketing, food service operations, and data analysis to advance LMU's commitment to people and planet priorities.

Compensation Data

COMPENSATION: The hourly rate or salary range for this position is $16.90 to $17.50. If both numbers are the same, that is the amount that Aramark expects to offer.  This is Aramark’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for this position as of the time of posting.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Marketing & Communications

  • Assist in the development and implementation of sustainability campaigns (e.g., Campus Sustainability Month, Earth Day, employee incentive programs)
  • Create educational signage and support tabling events focused on sustainable food initiatives
  • Serve as a liaison between dining operations and student sustainability organizations

Food Service Operations

  • Support recycling, composting, and single-use plastic reduction efforts across dining locations
  • Promote energy and water conservation initiatives
  • Help coordinate events featuring local farmers and vendors
  • Collaborate with sustainability champions at various campus dining facilities

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, organize, and analyze sustainability metrics (e.g., food waste, sustainable food spending, energy/water usage)
  • Contribute to external sustainability reporting efforts, including AASHE STARS and Times Higher Education Impact Rankings
  • Conduct environmental audits and research strategies to promote climate-friendly dining practices

Campus Engagement

  • Participate in physical assessments at LMU's campus (e.g., waste bin audits in dining facilities)
  • Support student engagement through events and outreach activities

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and intermediate math skills (including unit conversions)
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Coursework or experience in sustainability, environmental science, or related fields
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, hybrid environment (50% office-based, 50% fieldwork)

 This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
