Job Description

The Infant Nutrition Lab Supervisor reports to the Clinical Nutrition Manager and provides daily leadership and operational oversight for the Infant Nutrition Lab.

This position is accountable for the safe, accurate, and timely preparation, fortification, storage, labeling, and delivery of maternal human milk, pasteurized donor human milk, infant formula, and other prescribed enteral feedings.

The Supervisor coordinates staffing and workflow; validates compliance with physician orders; maintains infection prevention, sanitation, and quality-control standards; and ensures adherence to applicable regulatory requirements and Washington Regional policies. This position collaborates closely with clinical nutrition, nursing, lactation, pharmacy, providers, and other interdisciplinary partners to support safe, high-quality nutrition care for infants and pediatric patients.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide daily supervision, direction, and workflow coordination for Infant Nutrition Lab team members, including assignment of work, staffing coverage, prioritization of orders, and timely completion of feeding preparation and delivery.
• Supervise the receipt, preparation, fortification, storage, labeling, tracking, and distribution of maternal human milk, pasteurized donor human milk, infant formula, modular products, and other prescribed enteral feedings in accordance with verified orders and established procedures.
• Review feeding orders and related documentation for completeness and accuracy; perform or oversee required calculations, measurements, and independent verification processes; and promptly escalate discrepancies or questions to the appropriate clinician.
• Ensure consistent use of patient identification, labeling, traceability, expiration control, barcode scanning, and other safeguards designed to prevent preparation, storage, or distribution errors.
• Maintain rigorous infection prevention, aseptic technique, hand hygiene, sanitation, environmental monitoring, and equipment-cleaning practices throughout the Infant Nutrition Lab.
• Monitor and document refrigerator, freezer, and product temperatures; feeding preparation and delivery records; equipment performance; cleaning activities; lot numbers; expiration dates; and quality-control results. Initiate corrective action when variances occur.
• Manage inventory of formula, fortifiers, donor milk, supplies, and equipment; maintain appropriate par levels; rotate stock; minimize waste; and coordinate ordering, recalls, substitutions, and resolution of discrepancies.
• Lead orientation, competency validation, ongoing education, coaching, and performance support for Infant Nutrition Lab team members. Reinforce consistent practices across shifts and address performance concerns in partnership with department leadership.
• Collaborate with registered dietitians, nursing, lactation, pharmacy, providers, infection prevention, supply chain, and other departments to clarify orders, resolve feeding or product concerns, and ensure continuity of service.
• Support development, implementation, and review of procedures, competency standards, emergency plans, downtime processes, and readiness activities related to infant feeding preparation and distribution.
• Monitor quality and operational indicators, investigate errors, near misses, complaints, and process deviations, and partner with leadership on corrective actions and performance improvement initiatives.
• Maintain effective, professional working relationships with patients, families, team members, leaders, vendors, and other internal and external partners while protecting patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

Education:

• Completion of an accredited human nutrition, dietetics, nutrition, and dietetic technician, or closely related program, required.

Licensure and Certifications:

• Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR), credential through the Commission on Dietetic Registration required within six months of hire, preferred. Additional certifications may be required based on department or regulatory standards.

Experience:

• Minimum of one year of experience in a clinical nutrition, infant feeding preparation, neonatal, pediatric, patient care, or lactation-related setting, required. Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of safe human milk and infant formula handling, aseptic technique, infection prevention, sanitation, and temperature-controlled storage practices. Ability to perform and verify measurements, calculations, and conversions with a high degree of accuracy; interpret feeding orders; use electronic documentation and barcode systems; organize competing priorities; lead and train staff; identify and resolve workflow or safety concerns; communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams; and maintain confidentiality. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, time management, and service skills are required.

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective equipment (PPE).
