Job Description

The Retail Supervisor supports the daily operations of the National Park’s retail outlets, overseeing a team of Retail Sales Associates while delivering excellent guest service in a fast-paced, high-volume environment serving visitors from around the world. This role oversees staff training, merchandising, inventory management, food & beverage service, and overall store execution—including ice cream scooping and espresso-based coffee beverage preparation. 

As a working supervisor, this position engages directly with customers while providing on-the-floor leadership, coaching, and problem-solving. The Retail Supervisor maintains store standards, fosters a positive team culture, and contributes directly to the retail operation’s success. 

About Denali National Park & Preserve and Doyon/Aramark Joint Venture:  

Summer days in Alaska stretch nearly endlessly, with up to 20 hours of daylight on the Summer Solstice. Spanning 6.2 million acres, Denali National Park & Preserve is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America, and attracts over half a million visitors annually. Conveniently accessible by road—4.5 hours from Anchorage and 2 hours from Fairbanks. 

Doyon Limited and Aramark have teamed up in a Joint Venture as the Denali National Park & Preserve's Concessionaire. Open May to September, our operation manages the transportation, retail, guest service and food and beverage concessions with our client; The National Park Service. By road, our 100 Blue Bird Bus Fleet takes guests past the 15-mile public access point daily during summer months, allowing people to hike, view wildlife, climb, and camp where few people have set foot. 

This is a seasonal role with ideal dates of May 7 - September 23, 2026.

Job Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Training 

  • Supervise and support Retail Sales Associates during daily operations. 
  • Train staff on:
    • Customer service standards
    • POS and cash-handling procedures
    • Ice cream scooping and portion standards
    • Espresso machine use drink preparation and beverage quality.
    • Store cleanliness and safety protocols 
    • Provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback. 
    • Assist with scheduling and ensuring appropriate coverage during peak times. 

Customer Service 

  • Greet customers warmly, answer product and lodge-related questions, and ensure a positive shopping experience. 
  • Support associates in providing quick, high-quality service at the ice cream counter and coffee bar. 
  • Handle escalated guest concerns or complex transactions professionally. 
  • Maintain a welcoming, helpful, and service-oriented atmosphere. 

Store Operations 

  • Oversee opening and closing procedures including cash reconciliation, stocking, and preparing service stations. 
  • Ensure retail, ice cream, and espresso areas are clean, stocked, and visually appealing. 
  • Prepare and serve: 
    • Hand-scooped ice cream 
    • Espresso drinks (lattes, cappuccinos, americanos, etc.) 
    • Drip coffee and specialty beverages 
  • Maintain product quality, portion control, and consistency. 
  • Monitor daily workflow and adjust staffing or task assignments as needed. 

Cash Handling & POS Oversight 

  • Accurately complete register operations and support staff in proper cash-handling procedures. 
  • Reconcile cash drawers, investigate discrepancies, and follow loss-prevention policies. 
  • Ensure safe and compliant financial practices. 

Inventory & Merchandising 

  • Assist with receiving shipments, stock rotation, tagging, and stockroom organization. 
  • Monitor inventory levels for retail products, ice cream, coffee supplies, and paper goods. 
  • Communicate supply needs or shortages to the Retail Manager. 
  • Help create visually appealing displays aligned with brand and seasonal themes. 

Communication & Coordination 

  • Provide clear, regular communication between associates and management. 
  • Relay important updates on products, operating procedures, food safety, and guest service. 
  • Collaborate with other departments for lodge-wide events and peak visitor periods. 

Problem Solving & Guest Flow Management 

  • Respond quickly to issues such as long lines, equipment malfunctions (espresso machine, freezer, POS), or product outages. 
  • Adjust staffing between retail floor, ice cream counter, and coffee bar to optimize service. 
  • Maintain a safe and efficient environment for both guests and employees.

Qualifications

  • Previous retail, food & beverage, or customer service experience required; supervisory or shift-lead experience preferred. 
  • Experience with espresso machines, coffee preparation, or ice cream service strongly preferred. 
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills. 
  • Strong organizational ability and comfort working in a fast-paced setting. 
  • Basic proficiency with POS systems and cash-handling procedures. 
  • Ability to live and work in a remote national park environment. 
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Ability to stand for long periods and move throughout the store. 
  • Ability to scoop ice cream, operate espresso equipment, and perform repetitive motions. 
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. for stocking and supply tasks. 
  • Comfortable working in a remote location with high seasonal guest volume and variable weather.  

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
