Job Description

UVA Dine is seeking enthusiastic and customer-focused Student Workers to join our team as Baristas at the Starbucks location in Newcomb Hall on the University of Virginia grounds. This role offers a flexible opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience while contributing to a vibrant and inviting atmosphere for their peers, faculty, and guests. As a Barista, you will be key in preparing high-quality beverages and food items, providing exceptional customer service, and maintaining a clean and efficient store environment.

 

Hourly Rate: $16

Benefits include a Block 25 meal plan

*First year students receive $200 dining dollars

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve a variety of coffee, tea, and other beverages according to Starbucks recipes and standards, ensuring quality and consistency.

  • Prepare food items such as pastries, sandwiches, and other grab-and-go options as needed.

  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems, accurately handle cash and credit card transactions, and maintain a balanced cash drawer.

  • Provide friendly, efficient, and personalized customer service, taking orders, responding to inquiries, and creating a welcoming experience for every guest.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the store, including coffee machines, display cases, condiment bar, seating areas, and restrooms.

  • Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper handling, storage, and labeling of ingredients.

  • Stock and restock display cases, condiment bar, and other service areas throughout the shift.

  • Assist with inventory counts and report supply needs to the supervisor.

  • Adhere to all Starbucks brand standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Work effectively as part of a team to ensure smooth and efficient operations during peak hours.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Virginia.

  • Ability to read, write, and understand basic instructions.

  • Ability to perform basic math calculations for cash handling.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate academic schedules and store operational needs.

  • Prior experience in food service or customer service is preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, which may include exposure to hot beverages, steam, and noise.

  • Manual dexterity for operating espresso machines, handling cups, and preparing beverages.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach as needed.
