Job Description

UVA Dine is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Student Workers to join our Athletic Dining & Catering team at John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia grounds. This part-time role offers a flexible opportunity for UVA students to gain valuable experience in a dynamic culinary and service environment. Student Workers will provide essential support in the kitchen, assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness, organizing, and performing various tasks to ensure seamless operations for our student-athletes, coaches, and catered events.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist culinary staff with basic food preparation tasks, including washing, chopping, slicing, and portioning ingredients.
  • Support cooking operations by following instructions from chefs and cooks, ensuring food is prepared to quality standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen areas, including workstations, equipment, and utensils, throughout shifts.
  • Operate dishwashing equipment to clean dishes, trays, and cookware efficiently.
  • Assist with the organization and proper storage of food items, supplies, and equipment.
  • Transport food, supplies, and equipment within the arena's dining facilities as needed.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and ensure proper waste disposal.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down dining areas for athletic meals and catered events.
  • Perform general utility tasks as assigned to support the efficient flow of kitchen and dining operations.
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper handling and temperature control.
  • Adhere to all UVA Dine and Aramark policies and procedures.
  • Provide a polite and friendly demeanor when interacting with student-athletes, coaches, and guests.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly Rate: $16.00 per hour
  • Meal Plan Benefit: Eligible for a Block 25 meal plan during the semester. *First-year students receive $200 in dining dollars in lieu of a meal plan.

 

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Virginia.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand basic instructions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate academic and athletic schedules.
  • Prior experience in food service or kitchen work is a plus, but not required.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (e.g., 4-6 hours per shift).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in a kitchen environment, which may include exposure to hot, cold, and noisy conditions.
  • Manual dexterity for food preparation and cleaning tasks.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach as needed.
