Job Description
The General Utility Worker plays a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness, sanitation, and efficient operation of the Fresh Food Company dining facility at Newcomb Hall. This position is responsible for a variety of tasks that support the culinary and service staff, contributing to a positive dining experience for students, faculty, and guests.
Job Responsibilities
Dishwashing and Sanitation:
- Operate and maintain dishwashing equipment (dish machine, three-compartment sinks).
- Thoroughly clean and sanitize all dishes, pots, pans, silverware, glasses, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the dishwashing station and related areas.
- Ensure proper water temperatures and chemical levels for effective sanitization.
Kitchen & Dining Area Maintenance:
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen and dining areas, including floors, surfaces, equipment, and serving lines.
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors as needed.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and dispose of waste properly.
- Clean and sanitize food storage areas, including refrigerators and freezers.
Food Preparation Assistance:
- Assist with basic food preparation tasks as directed by culinary staff (e.g., washing, peeling, cutting fruits and vegetables).
- Support the setup and breakdown of dining areas for meal service.
Stocking and Transport:
- Receive and store deliveries of food, supplies, and equipment.
- Transport food items, supplies, and equipment within the dining facility.
- Stock serving stations, cupboards, and refrigerators with necessary items.
Equipment Operation & Reporting:
- Ensure all equipment is clean and in working condition; report any issues or malfunctions to management promptly.
- Perform light maintenance and custodial tasks as needed.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere strictly to all Aramark and UVA Dining safety policies and procedures, including proper food safety and sanitation guidelines (HACCP).
- Follow proper handling, storage, and labeling of food and chemicals.
- Comply with all university and dining services policies and procedures.
Customer Service & Teamwork:
- Maintain a positive attitude and provide excellent customer service to guests, customers, clients, and co-workers.
- Work effectively as part of a team to ensure smooth and efficient service.
- Take direction and follow instructions accurately.

Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and understand basic instructions.
- Basic understanding of sanitation procedures.
- Ability to follow basic safety procedures, especially regarding hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail and cleanliness.
- Reliability and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Positive attitude and strong communication skills.
- Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as dictated by business needs.
Physical Demands (may include but are not limited to):
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (e.g., 8+ hours).
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25-50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, push, and pull as needed.
- Ability to work in a kitchen and dining environment, which may be hot, humid, and noisy.
This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
