Job Description

The Cook will be a key member of the Athletic Dining and Catering team at John Paul Jones Arena, responsible for preparing and cooking high-quality meals for university athletes and special events. This role requires a passion for culinary arts, a strong understanding of food safety, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing outstanding service.

Job Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation: Prepare and cook a variety of menu items, following established recipes and culinary standards.
  • Menu Execution: Assist in the planning and execution of daily menus for athletic dining as well as for catering events.
  • Quality Control: Ensure all food is prepared to the highest standards of quality, taste, and presentation.
  • Food Safety: Adhere strictly to all food safety and sanitation guidelines to maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor food stock and communicate with the management team to ensure proper inventory levels.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth and efficient operations during service.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized work station and assist with the cleaning of kitchen equipment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Cook or in a similar culinary role.
  • Knowledge of various cooking methods, ingredients, and equipment.
  • Understanding of food safety and sanitation procedures (ServSafe certification is a plus).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by the athletic and event schedule.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds.

 

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
