Job Description

Chisos Mountains Lodge is in the Chisos Basin at 5,400 feet elevation, inside Big Bend National Park.​ The lodge offers a variety of rooms and cottages, plus a gift shop and dining room. Several stores are also located throughout the park at Rio Grande Village, Castolon, and the Service Station at Panther Junction. Big Bend National Park encompasses over 800,000 acres and contains three natural divisions: the Rio Grande with its meandering 118 miles of lush, green floodplain, the sprawling Chihuahuan Desert, and the majestic Chisos Mountain Range.

 

The Environmental Sustainability & Safety Manager is responsible for leading all environmental compliance, sustainability programs, safety culture, regulatory requirements, and contract deliverables across Big Bend National Park operations. This role owns the implementation, documentation, certification, and continuous improvement of environmental and safety management systems, including ISO 14001, EMS, OSHA compliance, waste programs, hazardous materials management, emergency preparedness, and all NPS contract requirements.

 

The Manager leads property-wide environmental and safety culture, oversees training, audits, inspections, data reporting, regulatory coordination, and cross-departmental support. This position ensures full compliance with federal, state, local, and NPS regulations; drives zero-waste and conservation initiatives; manages environmental and safety documentation; and partners with leadership to reduce risk, improve performance, and maintain operational excellence.

Job Responsibilities

Environmental Management & Sustainability

• Establish and lead the Green Team; oversee trash & recycling collection, sorting, contractor pickup, and wildlife-safe storage

• Lead implementation, documentation, and certification of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

• Maintain and update all EMS documentation, audits, and re-certification requirements

• Complete environmental data collection and reporting (waste, water, energy, procurement, GHG emissions)

• Support LEED-related project requirements and environmental contract deliverables

• Drive zero-waste efforts and attain related certifications

• Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance and reduce risks (spill kits, containment, expiring certifications)

• Oversee hazardous waste, universal waste, electronic waste, compost, and landfill disposal compliance

• Oversee and monitor storage tank program (aboveground & underground)

• Maintain relationships with regulatory authorities (Local/County/USPH, EPA, TCEQ)

• Accompany regulatory inspectors and respond to non-compliance findings

• Support development and implementation of environmental strategies including waste diversion, energy conservation, and water conservation

• Lead environmental training, observations, and new hire orientation environmental modules

• Track certification expirations and support renewals

• Primary contact for Blight pest control

• Conduct weekly recycling inspections and follow-up corrective actions

• Participate in internal audits, periodic evaluation walks, and EMS meetings

• Support Food & Beverage teams with zero-waste events

• Assist with recording, retention, and reporting of environmental data to LOB

 

Safety Management

• Lead the safety culture for the property; serve as primary educator and communicator for safety initiatives

• Maintain OSHA compliance including multi-site OSHA 300 logs

• Leverage compliance tools & programs (SAFE Portal, SAFE Metrics, Shoes for Crews, ServSafe, food safety logs)

 

Partner with Mark McKellar’s team for safety initiatives, audits, and data

• Support accident management, reporting, investigation, and prevention

• Assist leaders with employee transportation to medical care and WC claim investigations

• Ensure correct PPE and First Aid supplies are stocked and available

• Lead safety tasks & activities for NPS contract; complete safety audits and compliance in Master Scheduler

• Contribute to annual edits for RMP, Emergency Evacuation Plans, Fire Protection Plans

• Partner with NPS on fire prevention inspections

• Maintain required certifications (First Aid, CPR, AED) and schedule annual training courses

• Attend monthly NPS Safety & Wellness meetings

• Lead safety training & observations

• Ownership of red emergency binders & communication updates

• Ownership of fire extinguisher signoffs and inspection tags

• Ownership of relationship with fire suppression system vendors

• Plan and execute annual fire drills

• Oversight of gas station safety and certifications

Qualifications

• Computer literate in MS Office programs; Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint

• Experience with property management systems preferred

• Must be fluent in English; basic Spanish a plus

• Valid Driving License

• Bachelor’s degree preferred in Environmental Policy, Environmental Health & Safety, Sustainability, or related field experience

• 5+ years of environmental experience including tactical environmental work

• Experience implementing ISO systems preferred

• Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, CFR, “Green” programs, hazardous waste, and environmental regulations

• Proven leadership skills; ability to collaborate and lead without formal authority

• Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, and public speaking ability

• Excellent attention to detail, time management, and project management skills

• Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint

• Ability to obtain certifications: Propane Distribution, Hazardous Materials, UST Certification, Incident Commander, HAZWOPER, Serv Safe Proctor, etc.
