Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 16:00
Salary: £31,000 per annum
About the Role
We are seeking a talented and motivated Sous Chef to join our culinary team at the University of Hertfordshire’s DeHavilland Campus. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a vibrant food operation in a busy campus environment, delivering consistently high standards of food quality, presentation, and service.
As Sous Chef, you will play a key role in daily kitchen operations, supporting the Head Chef and helping to lead the team to success. You’ll be responsible for food production, compliance, stock control, and innovation in menu planning, ensuring that all work is carried out in line with food safety standards and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- Maintain food hygiene and safety standards in accordance with legislation.
- Assist in menu development, food ordering, and supplier management.
- Ensure food quality, presentation, and service levels are consistently high.
- Monitor and record food safety and H.A.C.C.P. documentation.
- Lead and motivate kitchen staff, providing guidance and training where required.
- Carry out stock control and assist in regular stocktakes.
- Uphold cleanliness and hygiene across all kitchen areas.
About You
We're looking for someone with a passion for food, strong organisational skills, and the ability to lead by example. You will need to be proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- NVQ Level 1, 2 & 3 (or equivalent)
- Basic Food Hygiene certification
- 1–2 years' experience in a professional or industrial catering kitchen
- Experience with H.A.C.C.P. documentation and food safety compliance
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to deputise in the Head Chef's absence
- Experience in menu planning and budget control
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work under pressure
