Job Description

The Occupational Claims Manager leads the organization’s occupational disability and workers’ compensation programs, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and alignment with health, safety, and operational objectives. This role oversees third-party claims administration, monitors vendor performance, and provides strategic guidance on complex workplace injury claims. Working closely with Operations, HR, Safety, and external stakeholders, the incumbent drives effective return-to-work and accommodation programs while supporting injury prevention initiatives. The position leverages claims data and performance metrics to identify trends, mitigate risk, improve employee outcomes, and reduce claim duration and costs. Success in this role is achieved through strong stakeholder partnerships, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of the overall claims management program.
 

Success in this role will be demonstrated through strong partnerships with Operations, HR, and Safety leaders; effective oversight and accountability of the third-party claims administrator; improved return-to-work outcomes; reduced claim duration and costs; and meaningful contributions to the organization's injury prevention and overall safety performance.

Job Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Governance

  • Lead the occupational disability management program, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives, legislative requirements, and safety strategies.
  • Establish program standards, policies, procedures, and performance expectations that support consistent practices across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with Workers' Compensation, Human Rights, Privacy, and Duty to Accommodate legislation across all Canadian provinces and territories.
  • Collaborate with the Safety & Risk Solutions prevention teams to strengthen the connection between injury prevention, injury management, and ESRTW programs.

 

Third-Party Claims Administration Oversight

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for the organization's third-party claims administrator.
  • Establish, monitor, and evaluate vendor performance through defined service level agreements (SLAs), key performance indicators (KPIs), and reporting mechanisms.
  • Hold the third-party administrator accountable for quality, timeliness, accuracy, regulatory compliance, and claim outcomes.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and identify opportunities to improve service delivery, claim duration, return-to-work outcomes, and overall program effectiveness.
  • Provide oversight and strategic support for complex, high-risk, high-cost, or escalated claims.
  • Identify emerging risks, trends, and systemic concerns and ensure appropriate escalation and resolution.

 

Return-to-Work & Injury Prevention

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of stay-at-work and early and safe return-to-work programs.
  • Partner with Safety, HR, and Operations leaders to support injury prevention initiatives and reduce lost-time injuries.
  • Ensure transitional work and accommodation programs are practical, sustainable, and aligned with operational requirements and employee capabilities.
  • Leverage claims and injury data to identify trends and recommend proactive prevention strategies.

 

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Operational Leaders, Human Resources, Labour Relations, Payroll, and Safety teams to ensure a coordinated approach to injury management.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and coaching to operational leaders on workers' compensation processes, accommodation requirements, challenges and return-to-work best practices.
  • Build collaborative relationships with Workers' Compensation Boards and other external stakeholders.

 

Reporting & Continuous improvement

  • Develop and maintain program dashboards and reporting frameworks that track key performance indicators, including claim duration, lost-time frequency, return-to-work outcomes, and workers' compensation costs.
  • Monitor program performance and vendor effectiveness through data-driven analysis and reporting.
  • Identify gaps, trends, and opportunities for improvement and implement targeted action plans.
  • Lead initiatives that improve employee outcomes, reduce organizational risk, enhance compliance, and strengthen overall program performance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in occupational disability management, workers' compensation, risk management, health and safety, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing third-party claims administration programs and managing vendor performance through KPIs, SLAs, and accountability frameworks.
  • Experience supporting complex workplace injury claims, return-to-work programs, and accommodation processes.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation legislation and practices across multiple Canadian jurisdictions.
  • Experience collaborating with Operations, Human Resources, Health & Safety, and external stakeholders in a complex, multi-site environment.
  • Operational experience and a strong understanding of business operations and workforce management are considered strong assets.
  • Experience and understanding of non-occupational disability management also considered an asset.

 

Education

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Disability Management, Human Resources, Business, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP), CHRL, CRSP, or related designation is considered an asset.

The pay range for this position is $95,000.00 - $100,000.00.
