Sous Chef - Retail and Summer Camp
Position Overview (Year‑Round Assignment)
The successful candidate will work in Retail Food Services at Queen’s University from the start of employment through the end of the academic year (April).
From June through August, the candidate will transition to work as a Sous Chef at Merrywood Camp in Perth, ON, a residential summer camp environment. Following the conclusion of the camp season, the candidate will return to their regular Sous Chef role in Retail at the JDUC.
Merrywood Camp Assignment Details (June–August)
- Live-on-site position: Accommodations at the camp are provided.
- Supports the Lead Sous Chef in food production for 70–100 meals/day, serving campers, counselors, and camp staff.
- Responsible for:
- Food preparation and execution
- Planned production and daily meal service
- Ordering and receiving food and supplies
- Adhering to dietary requirements and ensuring accommodations for special diets (allergies, medical needs, texture modifications, cultural or religious needs)
- Maintaining Aramark food safety and sanitation standards in a camp kitchen environment
Job Responsibilities

Job Duties in Retail
- Assist in the preparation and design of all food menus.
- Produce high-quality dishes with attention to taste, presentation, and consistency.
- Ensure timely kitchen operations that meet Aramark quality standards.
- Support or fill in for the Executive Chef in planning and directing food preparation.
- Troubleshoot kitchen issues and resolve operational challenges as needed.
- Train and supervise kitchen staff; create schedules and evaluate performance.
- Order supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Ensure all staff adhere to cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety best practices.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude with coworkers, clients, and customers.
Qualifications
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3+ years of culinary experience in a reputable restaurant or hotel (verified by supporting documents).
- Supervisory experience is an asset.
- Prior experience in large-batch cooking, food ordering, production planning, and/or special diet management is strongly preferred.
- Ability to adapt to varied work environments (camp kitchen, retail food outlet).
Language
- English – IELTS score of 7 or above (International candidates only).
Other Requirements
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Willingness and ability to live on-site during the Merrywood Camp season (June–August).
Employment Details
- Hourly Rate: $23.50 per hour
- Hours: 30–40 hours per week
- Status: Full-time, permanent
